Memorial Day 2010

This was our first year to be able to attend the Memorial Day Service in town. It was a very nice tribute to those who have given their lives for our freedom. It will be hard to spend another Memorial Day not going to one of those tributes.

The JROTC of our local high school.

I watched this woman walk up to the memorial and gently touch it. I imagined she was remembering a loved one who had died in a war. It was good to see that interaction and be reminded of what my freedom costs to others. Then, as they were introducing dignitaries, she was mentioned as being a Gold Star Daughter. I looked it up online and it refers to someone (typically mothers) who has lost a loved one in a war. In this case, she lost her father.

Carrying the wreaths to the memorial while part of the high school band played the anthems for each branch of the military.

Placing the wreaths at the memorial.

A Boy Scout leading the flag-burning demonstration. This was to show how to properly dispose of a flag that is no longer fit to be flown.

The cut the flag into pieces before demonstrating how to properly dispose of a flag. First they cut off the stars and burned it and then each stripe separately was cut off and burned. With each piece the speaker told what it represented and after each piece was put in the fire, they saluted.

Toward the end, Hannah and Samuel were getting antsy, so we walked away from the crowd so as not to be a distraction. She is just too cute to not take a picture of! LOL
