Field Trip (continued)

There were a couple of more sites of interest from our field trip yesterday.

We stopped for a picnic lunch at the Davy Crockett Birthplace State Park. It is a very nice little park with a camping section (really made me want to get the tent out and go camping!) and a nice playground near the picnic shelter. Picnics are always such a favorite for our children and when you combine that with a playground and another family (the missionaries who went with us) with 9 children, you have a completely incredible day! (Thank you, Lord, for stopping the rain for a little while.) We also checked out the museum. Noah absolutely loved this. He saw a real coonskin cap and pictures of Davy Crockett. He has been fascinated with Davy Crockett since we read about him earlier this school year. (No, Davy Crockett wasn't Baptist, it just happened to be a good spot to stop for a picnic on our way to the next point of interest. We ran out of time to see the cabin replica but maybe Jeremiah will take us back sometime for a camping trip.

We then traveled on to Sycamore Shoals State Park hoping to see the Overmountain Men Museum but we were 30 minutes too late. We did get to look at the reconstruction of Fort Watauga. The Watauga Association was the first settlement outside of the original 13 colonies. If I remember what I've heard correctly, Tidence Lane and some of his sons comprised some of those "overmountain men".

Approaching the fort...I have quite a few pictures,
maybe I'll figure out how to put a slideshow on the blog soon.
It's fascinating to think that 225 people sought refuge in this fort at one time.
